Instituto Britânico de Guimarães

Britanic Institute of Guimarães

Britanic Institute of Guimarães
The Associação Luso Britânica de Guimarães, commonly known as
The Instituto Britânico (The British Institute) was founded on 2nd July 1979.
Our founding members had connections to the Assembleia de Guimarães
where our language courses first started and were extremely well received.

Within a short time the number of students increased far beyond the
capacity of the facilities of the Assembleia de Guimarães. Therefore it was
necessary to find new premises. We found a beautiful building in the
heart of the historical centre of Guimarães, in Praça de S. Tiago.

Initially we were strongly linked to the British Council who oversaw our
courses and recruited native speakers from Britain which created
a small British community in Guimarães.

Later we were officially recognized by the Ministry of Education as a
private language school, which was an important step for the Institute.
As well as our main school in The Praça Santiago, satellite centres were also established in Celorico de Basto, Fafe,
Taipas and Cabeceiras de Basto. We also send teachers to local schools and institutions such as
Colégio Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Colégio do Ave, Fraterna, Infantário Nuno Simões
and Lar Santa Estefânia. Furthermore teachers are also available to teach in local companies and businesses if required.

Scholarships are offered to wards of Centro Juvenil S. José and Lar de Santa Estefãnia and to gifted students from
local schools, who, for various reasons , would not be able to join the Institute

We offer a wide range of English language exams from the University of Cambridge:
PET - Preliminary English Test
FCE - First Certificate in English
CAE – Certificate in Advanced English
CPE- Certificate of Proficiency in English.

In 2004 The Instituto Britânico celebrated its 25th anniversary.
